FAQ

Ask Steve…

What happens during an acupuncture treatment?
Normally an initial acupuncture session lasts one and a half hours. It starts with the patient filling out a complete health history. Next, we talk about the patient’s complaints, exploring many details about his or her problems. If the problem is mainly neuromuscular (i.e. a pain) problem I will palpate the body and have the patient help me find painful spots. Also, I may examine the tongue and Chinese pulse to help find imbalances in the body. Normally there will then be an acupuncture treatment next lasting about 30 minutes. At the same time assessment of the patient to see if and/or which Chinese herbs may be appropriate. Also, some people may be given some diet advice or lifestyle changes that can help them. Some patients may be given Chinese herbs with instruction on use to take home.

How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the condition, severity of the problem and how long you have had it. For example, if you are in good health and have a backache of recent origin, it may only take 1 or 2 treatments to get rid of it; however if you have had a problem for a long time a series of treatments is advisable (a good rule of thumb is 1 month of treatment for each year you have had this problem).

What is involved in the Stop-Smoking Program?
The program consists of four treatments of electro acupuncture lasting 1 hour. Usually we start the program on Monday, so a person has treatments Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and the following Monday. The success rate for the program is 75-80%.

Is acupuncture only for aches and pains?
Acupuncture and other forms of oriental medicine are very effective in preventative medicine. Many problems can be corrected before the use of drugs or surgery is required. The World Health Organization recognizes over 43 conditions that can be treated with Acupuncture.

Does it hurt?
Our needles are the size of a human hair. You may feel a little pinch (a small discomfort) going in, but once the needles are in place the patient usually does not feel them at all.

Do you reuse needles?
No, only single use, disposable needles are used and then thrown away.

How should I prepare for an Acupuncture Session?
It’s helpful to wear loose clothing and to make sure you have eaten something that day. Try to go easy on the coffee or better yet don’t drink it, as we want you as relaxed as possible. We ask that you refrain from wearing strong fragrances as some of our patients are sensitive to them and please turn off your cell phone.
